STARTING AND MAINTAINING YOUR ATV IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES
Though some ATV owners pack away their vehicles all winter because they’re concerned about the snow, you can still ride during cold weather as long as you’re proactive about maintenance. Here are a few tips for keeping your ATV running all winter.
FUEL ISSUES
Water getting into the fuel tank is a common issue during the winter. You should use a special fuel funnel for separating water from gas when filling up your tank. Adding in a fuel stabilizer with fresh fuel will also help deal with moisture issues in the tank.
BATTERY MAINTENANCE
Much like cars, ATV batteries tend to die more often in freezing temperatures. You should store the battery (and the ATV) inside to keep it from being exposed to the cold. You can also install a permanent trickle charger to juice up the battery overnight. For an optimal power supply, you’ll need to make sure that the battery terminals are clean and corrosion-free.
TAKING CARE OF OIL ISSUES
During cold weather, the oil in your ATV can thicken, which can make it more difficult to start. You should change your ATV’s oil and oil filter in the fall. Synthetic oil is better for winter because it’s thinner and will flow more quickly throughout the engine.
CLEAN THE AIR FILTER
During winter, small animals like bugs and critters might hide in the air filter, or other parts of your ATV, for warmth. This can lead to problems with airflow that will affect your engine’s performance. By cleaning your air filter regularly, you’ll keep it clear of dirt and bugs. You can also seal the filter with waterproof grease to protect it from leaks.
CHECK THE COOLANT
You should check the coolant in your engine and refill it with a product that can handle harsh Michigan winters. A low-quality coolant can freeze in cold weather, which can lead to serious engine damage.
STARTING AN ATV IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES
It’s normal for your engine to have a little trouble getting started when it’s cold, but once your ATV starts, let it idle for about five minutes to let it warm up. You should also take it slow for the first few minutes that you’re riding.
